If I were to visit Copiague today, what would I find?

There is no big draw to the Copiague area as there was in the early 1900s, but Copiague still has some interesting spots.

Today, Copiague is still a multiethnic working class neighborhood. There are still Italians in Copiague, but there is also a large Polish population, Hispanic residents, African-Americans and Turkish people - just to mention a few. Make sure to visit one of the ethnic eateries! If the weather is nice, take the food to Tanner Park and enjoy the salt air and scenery of the Great South Bay. Ask an angler what he caught. Most people are friendly, and will give you the time of day, or directions, if you ask them.

There is no Main Street per se. The main thoroughfare, Great Neck Road, runs north and south. It is commercial and residential. Sunrise Highway, (State Route 27), is an east-west thoroughfare. The businesses along the road are mainly commercial, and include car dealerships plus large retail stores. Montauk Highway, (State Route 27A), is the southern-most east-west road. It is markedly retail, but the shops are smaller and more personable than the larger stores along Sunrise Highway. The overall pace is much slower than on Sunrise Highway. If you look to the south, you can still see where parts of the Great South Bay meet the highway.

The hamlet of Copiague is flanked by Amityville to the west, and Lindenhurst then Babylon to the east. These neighboring towns have small, but nice, museums that display the historical life along the south shore. You could easily tour all three in one afternoon.

There are two ladies’dresses, accessories, and old house appliances from the later 1800s. There are also old maps (reprints), and reference books.
